DECOMMISSIONING IN CROTONE

Decommissioning of a site of national interest Syndial S.p.A, Ex Pertusola Sud – Step 2 and 3. Remediation and demolition of the former Pertusola Sud industrial area in Crotone.

The industry treated zinc sulphide (Sphalerite) for the primary production of zinc metal. At the same time, it also produced sulphuric acid and cadmium and, to a lesser extent, silvery mortars, germanium dioxide, lead sulfate and metallic indium.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

DEMOLITION CHIMNEY /FIREPLACE

The decommissioning operations were preceded by a series of preliminary clean-up interventions:

  • of products containing MCA;
  • of the system circuits in place.


The activities were carried out using closed-circuit intervention techniques, to avoid any type of contamination of the soil matrix and zero emissions into the surrounding environment.

Height of installations: from +10 to +45 meters.

Demolition of a 60-metre iron fireplace and a 90-metre reinforced concrete chimney.

Tons of waste managed:

  • 130,000 of demolished cement;
  • 18,000 of ferrous material demolished and sent for recovery;
  • 4,000 metal-based (dangerous) reclaimed waste with a mobile washing system.

PHOSPHORITE SILOS

An artefact made of reinforced concrete with a circular plan with an external diameter of 35 meters and a total height of 28 meters. Another critical element is the presence of radionuclides of natural origin (NORM: Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials e TENORM: Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials).
